Topics Targeting is a custom contextual targeting capability that offers you the ability to create your own contextual segments from 70,000+ granular topics we offer - directly from Realize!
What are Topics?
Topics represent themes of online articles, identified by analyzing the semantic relationship within the article content. Topics are not limited to words explicitly mentioned in the article. For example, an article about LeBron James might not mention basketball directly, but it could still be categorized under topics like basketball, NBA and Lakers.
Why should you use Topics Targeting?
Leverage real-time contextual intelligence powered by Realizes advanced technologies and our direct, code-on-page partnership with 9k+ publishers.
Go beyond standard contextual categories and build your own contextual segments tailored to your brand and campaign goals.
Improve ad relevance and performance without relying on personally identifiable information or 3P cookies.
When should you use Topics Targeting?
Target granular topics closely aligned with your target audience’s interests or your products and services.
Connect with your target audience at the peak moments of attention by placing your ads alongside trending topics such as:
Awards Season
Sporting events like the Olympics
Festival holidays
Political events
Use for exclusion purposes for topics you don’t want your ads to appear against (note: this is not considered as a brand safety solution, see more about brand safety here).
How to create a Topics Segment in Realize
To use Topics Targeting, you need to first create your own Topics segment.
Navigate to the Audiences page in your Realize dashboard and click on “+New Audiences”.
Select “Topics” to get started.
On the Segment Setup screen, enter a segment name and select the language that you wish to build the audience in choosing from one of 10 available languages we offer.
Then enter the topics you wish to build the segment for in the "Search for topic" field. As you type in topics, you will notice that additional related topics may appear, making it easier for you to select multiple topics.
Note: If you’re creating a Topics segment to be excluded in campaigns, set the Topics as “Include” on this screen, then choose “Exclude” in the Topics Targeting section on the campaign creation screen.
Select as many relevant topics to ensure sufficient scale. On the right hand side, you’ll see the estimated impressions and article count for the Topics segment you’re creating. Please note these estimates should not be interpreted as predictions of the actual campaign scale, since they do not reflect the additional campaign settings you will set up during the campaign creation process.
After you finish selecting the topics, click on “Create Segment >” to save the segment.
To target the topics segment in campaigns, go to the Topics Segments section on the campaign creation page, under Contextual Targeting. Select the Topics segment you wish to target from the drop-down menu. You can add multiple Topics segments to target in one campaign.
To modify the Topics segments, go to the Topics Segments tab on the Audiences page, where you can edit or archive existing Topics segments.
